Symptoms

Some patients with liver disease and esophageal and gastric varices are asymptomatic. Patients may also present with black or bloody stools, dizziness, paleness, vomiting or vomiting blood, or other symptoms of chronic liver disease (Garcia-Tsao et al., 2007).

Diagnosis

When a patient is diagnosed with cirrhosis, clinicians should be familiar with the Child-Turcotte-Pugh classification system for scoring cirrhosis severity in order to assess for esophageal (or gastric) varices (Pugh et al., 1973) (Table 5.1).
